Project to Demolish the Former Texon Mill Building

date Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 4:04 PM mailed-by cwmars.org

Just checking to ensure the Historical Society knew the City of Holyoke Gas and Electric Department put an announcement in the Central Register (dated July 29, page 23) for Demolition of the former Texon Mill Building in South Hadley and site clean up. I know there were statements earlier this month that indicated there might still be a developer for the building, but looks like that fell through.

They estimate the cost to take the building down and clean up the site at $664,000. That should be quite a sight.

Two mandatory pre-bid meetings at 9 Carew Street, on August 11 and August 18 at 11 a.m. (bidders only have to attend one).

General bid deadline is 8/26/09 at 2 p.m.

Thought you might like to know.

Cheers,

I believe that the decision of demolition for the Carew Maufacturing Co. or Texon Building is digraceful. It is to my perspective that this building is an historical landmark. Because of this Mill and others this is how South Hadley went into the Industrial Age in the 19th Century and also made South Hadley and Holyoke go into their Golden Age with industrialization. This magnificent structure should be saved from demolition and possibly made into a resturaunt or Museum that is managed by the South Hadley Historical Society. This building has so many memories from the older days and it would be a significant dissapointment to watch this be destroyed. So I ask the citizens of South Hadley and Holyoke to fight for the restoration of this building. Please we must save this historically significant building eternally. Thank You
