Ezra Day

I am descended from a line of Days. I have names and dates, but few locations. The one location I have is for Ezra Day, b. June 7, 17 73 in South Hadley ; died Sept 25, 18 31 and is buried in South Hadley Cemetery , opposite Mt. Holyoke College . He married Ruth Whipple (b. July 16, 17 76 ; d. Apr 5, 18 63 in Greenfield , Saratoga Co, NY) on Jan 17, 17 96 . They had at least one child, Sally Day, b. Nov 12, 17 97.

I can trace the generations from Ezra Day back to Robert Day (b. 1604) with dates and names of wives, but no locations. I would like to find out more about the Day family, especially WHERE they were born, married and died…Ellen Messick Hollister

The Walnut Grove Dairy

QUESTION:
“I recently purchased a milk bottle with the embossed name of walnut grove dairy on it. Do you have any information on where this dairy was located, and who owned it, or the years of operation? My family has lived in town for many years and we have never heard of this dairy...”

ANSWER:
Historical Society members have provided this information:
1. …This bottle plus a Green Pine Dairy Bottle are on the Internet (EBay) right now under (6213855293) & (6213849954). I will not BID on them but if any one else does I suggest that they let the group know…
2. I, at one time, collected milk bottles (they are gone now) and I compiled a listing of Holyoke and South Hadley bottles. As I remember, Walnut Grove was a beautiful embossed 1/2 pint bottle.
The only years I found this Walnut Grove was 1933 and 1934. However, also at 4 Elm Street was Mrs. Clara Martin, widow of Fred P. Martin…Martin's Holyoke bottle also says Jersey Cream and is identical to the Walnut Grove bottle…1918… Frederick P. Martin, wholesale cream, 4 Elm Street, SHF …In 1915, 4 Elm Street was Howard C. Lamb, milk dealer…1919 - Mrs. Clara A. Martin, widow Fred, wholesale Cream, 4 Elm Street…1932 - under milk dealers, Clara A. Martin, 4 Elm Street…1933 - First listing of Walnut Grove Dairy, Mrs. Clara A, Martin, 4 Elm Street, South Hadley Falls.

The Hampshire Paper Company

QUESTION
“…Several years back north of Cincinnati , I acquired a box of "Old Hampshire Vellum - A Stationary of Distinction." It has sat at our bureau for many years. I am curious to see what its age is… I am trying to find out the dates of when the Hampshire Paper Co. of South Hadley Falls, Mass was in business. Would you be able to help me to find out this information or be able to direct me to someone who can help? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, -Ann…”

ANSWER:
According to "The South Hadley 250th Anniversary Book (2003), page 47:
"About 1864, the Glasgow Co...built a mill that produced paper of excellent quality... (that) in April 1866...was sold to Edward, Wells, and John Southworth, previous stockholders in the Glasgow Co., who organized the Hampshire Paper Co. Hampshire Paper was managed by the Southworth family until late 1935 when the Hampshire mill machines were shut down. Production of Old Hampshire bond and other well-established lines (Ann, perhaps including your Old Hampshire Vellum?) was carried on by the Carew Manufacturing Co., using some of Hampshire Paper's facilities.
On January 24, 19 40 , the Stevens Paper Mills, Inc. of Windsor , CT , took over the Hampshire Paper Co…about 1968, the South Hadley plant was closed. The mill was demolished about 1970."
On Page 34 of the 250th book, a caption of an excellent photo reads, "View in 1895 of the...Hampshire...mills..."
A search for "Hampshire Paper Co." on Google provided this link: http://www.holyokemass.com/historic/hwp_1876/lith25.html. Apparently, the Hampshire Paper Co. had operations in Holyoke as well as S. Hadley.

Clarence George Shocro

“I am looking for information about my father's family. My father was Clarence George Shockro, and he was born and raised in South Hadley , MA (born in June of 1909). His grandfather immigrated from Ireland perhaps under the name of Sughrue. How might I find information about my father's family from the time they arrived in South Hadley ? Patricia Gordon.”
